Dear diary.
Today has been another great day in Canada. Together with my friends Julie, Runar and Fredrik I started the day with breakfast in a typical Canadian restaurant. After breakfast Julie and I went shopping in Toronto. We went to a lot of different stores and bought many clothes and shoes. Fredrik and Runar went to a training center. They wanted to train because they had eaten too much fast food. In the afternoon all of us went by car to the Niagara Falls. We were all very fascinated by the landscape. It was really beautiful. Niagara Falls is a 50 meters high waterfall, which forms the international border between Canada and The United States of America. On our way home we saw a real grizzly bear! A grizzly bear can be up to 620 kilos. That is huge! We all felt it was scary but also exciting! Julie is a big Justin Bieber fan and had reserved tickets for us to the night concert in Toronto. That was a once in a life time experience. No doubt Justin Bieber is the most famous artist from Canada. Now I have to some sleep. Tomorrow it is time to go home to Norway.

Illegal immigrants – a big social issue in Canada
One of the biggest social issues in Canada is illegal immigrations. Illegal immigrants are people who are not legally permitted to live in the country. Every year thousands of people come illegally from Mexico, Argentina, Hungary, Costa Rica, Ireland and Eastern Europe. It has been said that more than 8% of people who immigrate to Canada arrive illegally, and that another 8% have expired their visa. That makes the total number of undocumented people in Canada between 100 000 and 200 000. Only a few off these people will ever get a legal status in the country. One of the reasons why so many people immigrate to Canada is that the living standard is very high. Actually only the United States of America have more immigrants than Canada. For political reasons, the Canadian government some years ago took the initiative to legalize undocumented people by granting amnesty. So far these efforts have not been successful, and the number of illegal immigrants has increased even more. This is a paradox, since Canada has some of the most liberal immigration rules and refugees in the world. Therefore illegal immigrations should not be necessary.

Maple Leaf – the flag of Canada
The national flag of Canada (Maple Leaf) has red and white colors. It is white in the middle and red on each side. In the middle of the flag there is a red leaf, which the name “Maple Leaf” comes from. The “Maple Leaf” is designed by George F.G Stanley and John Matheson. The flag was released on 15. February 1965. Since then, this day has been celebrated as “the national flag of Canada day”. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of nature and environment in Canada. During the history Canada has had a lot of different flags. The first ones where connected to France. From the early 1760s the flag of the flag of the Royal Union, called Union Jack, was used as the national flag. From 1868 to 1964 they had different versions of a flag called The Canadian Red Ensign. In the early 60s there was a huge national debate about the flag. In 1965 Elisabeth the second, queen of Canada proclaimed the new flag. A lot of people think Canada’s flag is the world’s most beautiful flag, and most Canadians are very proud of it. The national government has sponsored a lot of programs to promote their beautiful flag.

The Olympic games biggest event!
“Come here, come here!”
tickets to tonight’s biggest event, and possible the best ice hockey game ever.
It is USA against Canada!” I was walking towards this suspicious man, but then
I remembered that my friends and I had four tickets in the Rogers Arena where
the final is going to be played. I was so happy when Runar came and told us
(me, Julie and Caroline) that we were going to Vancouver and see the Olympic
Games. And when he said that he had tickets to the final in ice hockey, I was
in the seventh heaven. But Julie and Caroline were all like “hockey is not fun,
it is just an unnecessary sport and it is too brutal.” Runar just snuffed to
the comment from Julie and said “we are all going to Vancouver, be happy for
that!” And here we are, standing in front of the Rogers Arena. “This game is
going to be a cracker of a match; it is the two best national teams in the
world. I am looking forward to this match.” Runar said. “What a game this was!”
I yelled out after the final was finished. “And the best team won, Canada!”
shouted Runar. “When Sidney Crosby scored a goal in the overtime, it felt like
the Arena was jumping, it was so much cheering for Canada and so many angry
American’s.” I said to the others. Outside the streets were filled up with
Canadian flags and people were shouting “this is Canada, Canada is the best!”
But American people just sat in their cars and drove home. “So, what are you up
to now, shall we go and taste a little bite of their food culture?” asked
Julie. “Let us celebrate Canada’s victory!” Runar answered.
Canada Cuisine
going to tell about the Canadian food culture (the Canadian cuisine) and what
the Canadians eat. In Canada the food varies widely in the regions of the
country. Canadian cuisine is divided into three groups: First nations, English
and French. From the First nation they have fish dishes. From England they have
the apple pie. The apple pie is a delicious and juicy. It feels like it made
from heaven. And from the French people they got gorgeous French pastry. Like
baguette and “pain au chocolate” and “crepès.” The national foods of Canada are
Poutine and Butter tarts. Poutine is a dish made of French fries, fresh cheese
curds and it is covered in brown sauce. Butter tart is a type of small pastry
tart. Butter tart is one of the most classical desserts in Canada. Around half
of the citizens in Canada keep Poutine as their favorite national dish. In
Canada they drink loganberry and bagged milk. Loganberry is a drink from
Crystal Beach, Ontario. Bagged milk is milk covered in plastic bags. Bagged
milk is common in many countries including Argentina, Brazil and Canada. And
this is how Canadian people regularly eat and drink every day.

Canada’s sport culture
The sporty life of a Canadian is very different from many other countries. The Canadians,
compared to any other country, prefer a unique set of sports that are imported
from USA or grown up in Canada. Football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey and
lacrosse are regular sports in Canada. Canadian football or called gridiron is
the term for North American football. And Lacrosse, which is a sport with aboriginal
origins, is Canada’s oldest sport. Lacrosse is played with a small rubber ball
and a large stick called crosse. Lacrosse is Canada’s official summer sport and
ice hockey is the official winter sport. Ice hockey is the most popular sport
in Canada. After the winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, has Canada been
the best national team in the world. They are even better than USA. In the end,
I think Canadian people are in good condition and are very sporty, also
Canadians are sport interested.
